- Story Text: Residents of a Thailand village near the Thai-Cambodia border called for dialogue on Monday (November 11) following a decision by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to award ownership of disputed land, near the Preah Vihear temple, to Cambodia.
The Court ruled that Thailand must withdraw all military and police forces from the area surrounding the 900-year-old Hindu temple on the far side of its border with Cambodia, which could exacerbate tensions between the two countries.
A resident of Ban Phumsaron village, Chin Prasankij, said: "The conclusion is fine. The two countries should talk and they should find common ground together."
Another resident of the village, Wannee Chanapol, said: "It'll be good if they can find a common solution together. I'll be ready for whatever the result from the negotiations is. Whatever will happen, it will happen," he said.
The Court awarded the temple itself to Cambodia in a 1962 judgement, but Thailand maintained that ownership of the rest of the land near the temple had not been settled. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
