- Story Text: Indian holyman's rare mango tree defies science, bearing fruit in winter.
A rare mango tree belonging to a self-proclaimed holyman in a northern Indian village has puzzled locals and scientists with its unique ability to bear fruit all year round.
The tree, is famous for its mango produce, and is said to be over 30 years old. Its owner Baba Manik Ram claims to have brought it from Afghanistan.
How the ageing farmer managed to transport the tree to India remains a mystery with locals attributing his globe trotting claims to his divine powers.
"The tree flowers in March every year and keeps on flowering till the next March. We have fruits 12 months a year. I brought this tree from Kabul," said Manik Ram, who owns the tree.
The delicious and juicy mango has long been one of India's most popular fruits. Generally, mangoes are available from April to September, but June and July usually offer the best pick The unique tree, however, gives its produce in March but its colour, texture and fragrance are exactly like that of a healthy June Mango.
"This has been here for the last 30 years, it bears fruit for 12 months. Many scientists have visited the site and examined the tree. Research about its unique tree is on," said Vijay Singh Yadav, a local.
India is the world's largest mango-growing country, providing about 60 percent of the total world production. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
