- Story Text: Singapore's mixed martial arts fighter Sherilyn Lim has been preparing for her first professional championship, realising a lifelong dream that began in 2007.
The 22-year-old said she first started training in the Thai martial art of muay thai in the hopes of losing weight.
She was eventually exposed to mixed martial arts, a combination of everything from muay thai to taekwondo, wrestling and jiu-jitsu, and that was where she found her niche.
When asked if she has a timeline to achieve certain goals, she said she would rather focus on letting herself develop as a fighter.
"Well hopefully in the next five years I get a title shot, man. How long do I intend to stay? I don't usually want to put a time limit on myself, because I don't really believe in putting a time frame to that, because If you limit yourself, if you give yourself "x" amount of years..it's like you're short changing yourself...because you tell yourself, you only have "x" amount of years and you're just going to do it for "x" amount of years and you're going to stop," she said.
She briefly pursued a career in advertising before getting back into mixed martial arts in 2011 and putting in long hours of training.
"It's rough, man. I'm here at 9am training every day. So, you put in about six to eight hours per day. There's no negotiation about it. You are going to step into a cage and you're going to fight another human being. And you have to be as prepared as you can ever be. I don't think there's any limit to how much you can train. You can never say, 'oh I'm okay with this, now, I'm done with this, I'll just move on to the next'. It always evolves, it always changes, everything has to improve together," Lim said.
Lim will enter the ONE FC cage facing Malaysia's Ann Osman in her first fight on October 18. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
