- Story Text: A senior military commander with Libya's National Transitional Council was buried in Tripoli on Thursday (September 29), after being killed by forces supporting Muammar Gaddafi in Bani Walid.
Senior commander Daou al-Salhine died on Tuesday night (September 27) in a rocket barrage. Eight others were also killed in the attack.
He was one of the highest-ranking commanders on that front.
At Bani Walid, fighters loyal to Libya's interim government managed to enter the centre of the desert enclave last Saturday (September 24) but came under heavy fire and were forced to retreat.
Lack of coordination and divisions at the frontlines have been hampering NTC attempts to capture both Bani Walid and Sirte, the coastal hometown of Gaddafi.
Many fighters go into battle wearing flip-flop sandals, t-shirts and jeans, and have no military training.
More than a month since NTC fighters captured the capital Tripoli, Gaddafi remains defiantly on the run, pledging to lead a campaign of armed resistance against the new leaders. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
