Vietnam started very quick, very strong and the first minutes were for them but after that on our first chance we scored and we scored some great goals tonight, they played at a good pace and overall did a very positive night. Vietnam has qualities but I think they suffered a little bit defensively against our pace up front." - Story Text: Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was pleased with his side's performance in their 7-1 win against the Vietnam national team in a pre-season friendly in Hanoi on Wednesday (July 17).
French striker Olivier Giroud scored a hat-trick in the first half. Teenager Chuba Akpom netted a brace, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Isnasi Miquel also scored in Arsenal's second match of their Asia tour.
Speaking after their win, Wenger said the match was good preparation for the season which begins in August.
"The game played with a good pace, with a very good spirit and for us of course it was a good preparation for the season," said Wenger.
"Vietnam started very quick, very strong and the first minutes were for them but after that on our first chance we scored and we scored some great goals tonight, they played at a good pace and overall did a very positive night. Vietnam has qualities but I think they suffered a little bit defensively against our pace up front," the Frenchman added.
Wenger also voiced his admiration for a Vietnamese fan who managed to get on the team bus and meet his heroes.
"He was the one who refused to give up and ran after the coach, on the side of the coach, and of course everybody started to say 'Hello, how are you' and then in the end, to reward him because he refused to give up, we brought him on the coach and said 'congratulations'," said Wenger. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
