- Story Text: Some of the world's best surfers hit the waves in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday (May 09) as the ASP World Championship Tour arrived in the South American country.
The Rio event, which is the tour's third leg of ten cities, is also known as the Billabong Rio Pro.
American surfer and current ASP World surfer number one, Kelly Slater, decided to withdraw from the Rio competitions after injuring his knee surfing in Java.
Brazilian surfer Adriano de Souza said he had mixed emotions about Slater's absence from the event.
"(Kelly) Slater's absence affected the championship a little bit. The entire media and the event's infrastructure revolves around him. But for me he is an opponent, an adversary, so this means one less opponent on my way. I am actually happy and sad at the same time," he said.
The men's Billabong Rio Pro runs from May 09 until May 20. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
