- Story Text: Ukrainian authorities, preparing to host Euro-2012 in less than a month, unveiled the renovated airport Zhulyany in the capital Kiev on Thursday (May 17).
The old Soviet-built airport located in the centre of Kiev, in recent years has been used mostly by local airlines and business jets. Ahead of Euro-2012 it has undergone a major renovation.
"Zhulyany is not part of the Euro-2012 programme and we didn't have any obligations towards UEFA connected with this airport, but nonetheless, we have completely modernised the runway, investors have built a new terminal and already today UEFA is taking this place into account when it plans charter flights, I think this airport more than other Ukrainian airports will be used by business jets," said Boris Kolesnikov, Ukraine's infrastructure minister in charge of preparations for Euro-2012.
Ukraine, threatened with a political boycott over the jailing of opposition politician Yulia Tymoshenko on Tuesday (May 15) put off a ruling on her appeal until the tournament is under way.
The European Union has condemned Tymoshenko's abuse-of-office conviction last October and her seven-year prison sentence as politically motivated. It has called for her release and shelved landmark association and free trade deals with Ukraine over the issue.
European leaders are also considering a boycott of Ukraine's part of the European football championship, which it will stage in June and July together with Poland. The delay means Tymoshenko's hearings will resume during the Euro 2012 tournament and less than a week before the July 1 final in Kiev. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
