Jews around the world celebrate the holiday by a special customs of eating of apples and honey, symbolising the hope that the coming year will be "sweet".
In Jerusalem, men and women rushed to the market place for last-minute shopping ahead of the holiday, while police forces deployed in around the crowded shopping area to secure it. Israeli security also deployed in the old city of Jerusalem and in main cities across the country.
The Israeli army had also imposed a full closure on Palestinian territories in the West Bank, an Israeli army spokesperson's announcement said.
Humanitarian cases as well as various Palestinian professional groups such as doctors, farmers, medical personnel and NGO workers were granted special permissions to enter Israel, the announcement added.
