- Story Text: Hundreds of people gathered near Moscow's central synagogue for the opening of the rebuild Dome and a symbolic wailing wall- a 15 metre long replica of the one in Jerusalem.
Moscow's central synagogue witnessed a significant event on Wednesday (May 16) - the opening of the new Dome and a symbolic wailing wall.
The old Dome of the synagogue was destroyed in the 19th century, a year after the building was erected.
The opening ceremony attracted both members of the Jewish community, the Russian government and Moscow authorities. The ceremony was addressed by Chief Rabbi Adolf Schayevich who spoke of the importance of the event for the Moscow Jewish community. Jewish believers will now have their own wailing wall that is 15 metres long and 3 metres high.
For many who have gathered today this event was of vital significance.
"We are happy and proud that we have lived to see the day when we can express our will freely", said World War II veteran Semyon Tesser.
For decades Russian Jews have struggled to keep their faith alive while frequently being scapegoats in Russian history.
Moscow synagogues have been frequently attacked synagogues in Moscow caused many Russian Jews to consider leaving the country.
But those who decided to stay in Russia are glad that Jewish traditions and culture are reviving. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
