- Story Text: An Indonesian judge postponed a court hearing on Thursday (September 27) for a British woman suspected of smuggling drugs the country after her lawyer failed to turn up.
Lindsay June Sandiford, 56, was arrested by custom officials at Bali's Ngurah Rai airport in May, 2012 after 4.7 kilogrammes of cocaine, worth 2.6 million U.S. dollars, was seized from her suitcase, officials and police said. She had travelled from Bangkok to Indonesia.
Sandiford hid her face from the cameras with a red headscarf as she walked into the courtroom.
Sandiford said she did not accept the lawyer appointed by the court and would choose her own to defend her.
The court was adjourned to next week.
Indonesian police have vowed to crack down on illegal drug smuggling in Bali, which they have said has become a hub for international narcotics distribution.
Indonesia has a maximum penalty of 12 years in jail for drugs possession, and smugglers can face the death sentence. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
