- Story Text: Fans gathered early near Buckingham Palace on the last day of the Olympic games on Sunday (August 12) for the start of the men's marathon and praised the games and all the competitors.
Asked about the most memorable things, Bernadette said: "The most memorable part has been watching all the athletes get fantastic haul of gold medals; the British public showing London in a fantastic light. I can't -- I'm speechless."
Alison was waiting with daughters Isabel and Anna and said all children would be inspired.
"I think the children for the future will be inspired to, to try their best in, in sports. I think there's been some really good surprises and I think children will be inspired to take up sport and have a go for themselves."
The girls said they were proud of all the British champions.
Another fan, Jack, commented: "Well once, once it's finished, I think the legacy of the Olympics will last forever because it's had such a positive effect on everyone that's come here. Everyone's been talking about how the atmosphere and the crowd have been so positive towards everything. It's just. it's created a really nice reputation for the city."
In other finals on Sunday, the United States will defend its basketball title against Spain and medals will also be decided in boxing; mountain biking; rhythmic gymnastics; handball; women's modern pentathlon; volleyball; water polo; and wrestling.
Before Sunday's events, the USA led the gold medal tally with 44, to China's 38 and Great Britain's 28; their total medal tallies are 102, 87 and 62 respectively. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
