- Story Text: DAR ES SALAAM, TANZANIA INTRODUCTION: Zimbabwe's President, Canaan Banana, arrived in Dar Es Salaam on Wednesday (1 July) for a five-day state visit to Tanzania. He was given a VIP welcome by Tanzania's President Julius Nyerere and cabinet ministers. The welcome included a 21-gun salute, a military guard of honour and the freedom of the city of President Banana.
SYNOPSIS: President Banana and his wife flew in at the head of a 30-strong delegation representing Africa's newest independent black nation. They were there at the invitation of President Nyerere who had paid a similar visit to Zimbabwe last December. The two countries have strong links, developed before and after Zimbabwe's independence early in 1980.
President Nyerere gave strong backing to Zimbabwe guerrillas during their seven-year bush war against the government forces upholding white minority rule in the country.
President Banana's five-day schedule includes visits to the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar and the city of Dodoma. This city, which is about 260 kilometres (230 miles) west of Dar Es Salaam, had recently been chosen as the new capital of Tanzania.
