- Story Text: The hugely popular Asian elephant baby Kiri has been found dead in the Berlin zoo.
Zookeepers found Kiri, a nine-month old Asian elephant baby, dead in its enclosure on Thursday morning (December 28).
Zoo spokesmen said that the cause of the elephant's death was most likely a virus infection.
Kiri was hugely popular among zoo visitors. Filmed by zoo members, it was the first such birth at the zoo in 62 years.
Shortly after birth Kiri was abandoned by his mother, leaving zookeepers to bottle-feed him.
The death came as a big surprise to all because there were no signs of illness. He was playing in the snow on Wednesday, was fed in the evening and then seen by a keeper playing with a ball.
Kiri had gained about one kilo weight per day. Born at 145 kilos, he weighed nearly 400 kilogrammes at death. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
