- Story Text: The chief of Bali's Krobokan prison, I Gusti Ngurah Wiratna, told reporters on Friday (May 25) Australian drug trafficker Schapelle Corby would be released in 2017.
Corby who was arrested in 2004 for trying to smuggle 4 kg (9 lb) of cannabis in a surfboard bag had applied for clemency on the grounds of ill health.
The Indonesian government said on Tuesday (May 22) President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had reduced her sentence.
"After the sentence reduction of five years by the President, the end of the sentence will be on 20th September 2017," Wiranta told a news conference held outside the prison complex. "So the prison sentence of 20 years has become 15 years," he said. "Corby has spent eight years, four months and seventeen days of her sentence now in prison."
Media reports say Corby can apply for parole as early as next week and her sentence could expire in 2015 if she is awarded remission. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
