- Story Text: INTRODUCTION: World Cup soccer ....and Uruguay have seized the lead in the South American 'Group Two' qualifying round by defeating Colombia 3-2. The narrow loss for Colombia on Sunday (9 August) followed their drawn match against Peru, two weeks earlier.
SYNOPSIS: The stadium at Montevideo was packed with fans cheering Uruguay, in the blue and white shirts.
Playing a strong, defensive game, Colombia made it difficult for the Uruguayan forwards to penetrate. A free kick to star forward Paz in the 20th minute resulted in the first goal of the match, much of the delight of the fans and Uruguay's players.
Colombia took the offensive, and after another 20 minutes of exciting play, Sarmiento headed an equaliser.
Uruguay started the second half tentatively. The stadium came alive with a near miss by Colombia. It was a let-off for the home side, and proved costly for the visitors.
Then, in the 57th minute, Herrera finished of yet another Colombian counter-attack to put his side ahead 2-1.
Uruguay launched a scrambling offensive. A goal by Morales was disallowed, the more bad luck came for the home side when a shot for goal hit the bar.
Morales, how had earlier scored one of Uruguay's goals by converting a penalty, became the hero of the match with his second goal. With just three minutes remaining, Uruguay had clinched a 2-3 lead and victory.
The fans were jubilant, knowing the win had given Uruguay their first two points in the qualifying round. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
