- Story Text: The streets of Munich were all but empty on Sunday (May 26) morning after the city's residents partied into the small hours, celebrating Bayern Munich's Champions League win over German rivals Borussia Dortmund.
All that was left of the party were the mounds of plastic cups and food wrappers on the central Leopoldstrasse where earlier soccer fans had gathered cheering, singing and shouting about their pride in their team.
Bayern beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at London's Wembley stadium on Saturday (May 25) after an 89th-minute goal by Dutchman Arjen Robben clinched the Bavarians the title.
Sunday newspapers in Germany were covered in the news, with headlines ranging from "King Jupp", referring to Bayern boss Jupp Heynckes and "Robben shoots Bayern to the title".
The mood had been entirely different 600 kilometres to the north in Dortmund, a former mining town about as far away from the glitzy and cosmopolitan world of Munich that you can get in a country where opinion was divided on who was the popular choice in the all-German final.
At the city's central Friedensplatz square, where the previous evening thousands of Dortmund fans had gathered to watch the match on a giant screen, most of the signs of a party were already gone. Just a lonely Borussia Dortmund flag could be seen flying from a post.
"I would say that Borussia were just as good in the game, they were just unlucky. But they have shown that Dortmund and Bayern are on the same level in Europe, definitely," Dortmund fan Manuel Grossmann told Reuters TV.
"Of course we unfortunately lost the game which I very sad about but what can you do? They played really well but it sadly just wasn't enough," said Manuel Moser.
Both teams are scheduled to return home to Germany on Sunday afternoon. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
