- Story Text: Around 7,000 fans crammed into the fanzone in Kharkiv to watch Denmark shock Netherlands 1-0 in the Group B opener on Saturday (June 9).
While Dutch fans were left fuming about the performance of their team, the Danish fans couldn´t believe their luck
"First of all I´m surprised. I´m really surprised, but I´m really happy. It had to be like this, it´s our time, it´s our year, it´s our championchip", said one named Andreas. . Even though the hub of the Dutch team is located in Krakow, Poland, Kharkiv has become the unofficial "Dutch capital" for the first round of the European championship, co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine.
And despite the loss, Kharkiv's Dutch contingent - and a few locals who have adopted the team - remain confident about their team's chances of further progression in the tournament.
"I´m a Dutch team fan and I´m really upset that they lost," said one Kharkiv resident, Kolya. "I´ve counted on the Dutch team to win the Euro-cup this year. And I still believe in it. I don´t doubt it. There are still two matches coming with Portugal and Germany. And the victory is lying ahead."
The Netherlands will have their next two games in Kharkiv against Germany and Portugal. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
