- Story Text: Burmese dissident students have expressed doubts that the military junta will hand power to the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD), which seems to have won Sunday's (may 27) election.
Junta leader General Saw Maung said on Wednesday (may 30) that officials results would take a week or two and the army would keep control until it could hand over to a new government.
But Burma Students Democratic Front (ABSDF) Vice-President Naing Aung said that his group, which took up arms in the jungle after a bloody 1988 crackdown a democracy movement, was still pushing for true democracy and human rights in Burma and the NLD's apparent landslide election success was not a "complete victory".
Diplomats in Rangoon said the unofficial results giving the NLD a landslide victory caught the army off guard since it expected a divided parliament which would debate a new constitution for up to two years. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
