- Story Text: Indonesia's Mount Sinabung erupts once again, spewing volcanic material from its crater, forcing residents to flee.
Indonesia's Mount Sinabung spewed volcanic ash reaching a height of five kilometres on Monday (November 11) in its eruption after two days of calm.
"There has been an eruption at 6:14 local time (2314 GMT on November 10), creating 5,000 metres of volcanic ash column in the air followed by hot clouds as far as 1.5 km with the direction to south and southeast," observation post official Agus Budianto said.
He added that the situation is unlikely to improve in the next few days.
"Compared with a few days ago today had the tallest hot clouds and according to our data, the escalation will not stop," Budianto added.
The military helped evacuate more than 2,000 people from villages around the volcano, which is 88 km from the provincial capital, Medan. No casualties have been reported.
"We have already done two trips bringing villagers from Guru Kinayan village to the nearby town of Kabanjahe, a total of 2,406 people," local official Toni Sembiring said.
The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation has put the volcano's status on alert level three, recommending people not to approach the volcano within a radius of three kilometres from the crater.
The volcano had been inactive for four centuries before first erupting in August 2010.
Sinabung is one of nearly 130 active volcanoes in the world's fourth-most populated country, which straddles the "Pacific Ring of Fire". - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
