- Story Text: July 8 marks the first anniversary of the last Brixton riot in 1981 which saw some of the worst street fighting in mainland Britain during a summer of troubles. Despite an enquiry, and a lot of work within the community, the basic problems which sparked off the riots remain. Unemployment in the area among young blacks has risen dramatically and street crime in Brixton is higher than anywhere else in the country. Chief superintendent Bob Marsh of Brixton police admits privately that his men walk a tightrope when they arrest a black suspect, and publicly he says little has changed and the riots could happen again. Community relations official Amu Mudu says he believes it's less likely to happen again than most people think, but unless the underlying problems of unemployment, better housing and community education are tackled, the area could erupt.
