- Story Text: Brazilian soccer fans celebrate beating reigning world and European champion Spain in Confederations Cup final in Rio de Janeiro.
BRazil humbled world and European Champions Spain when they crushed them 3-0 to win the Confederations Cup final on Sunday (June 30) and end their opponents' three-year record run of 29 unbeaten competitive matches.
The crowd gathered in the Rio fan zone remained jubilant throughout as the Brazilians earned the lead they would never relinquish after an early gutsy goal from Fred in the first minutes of the game.
Brazil defence made the necessary plays to secure the shutout with some nifty plays by defender David Luiz and a penalty kick denial by goalie Julio Cesar.
Neymar nailed a stunning left-foot shot later in the first half of play to go up 2-0.
Then the always opportunistic Fred added to the count in the second half with another skilful goal.
Brazil, next year's World Cup host, garnered their fifth straight win in the competition as they clinched the trophy for a third time in a row.
Neymar, the newly-signed striker of European powerhouse club Barcelona, was awarded the Golden Ball award for being the best player in the tournament.
"You have to respect Brazil for all the things they have accomplished and the great players they have. You have to respect Brazil," said Brazilian soccer fan Silvestre dos Anjos.
"Brazil did a great job winning the cup. It was a great triumph. They played excellently in every game," said Dayana Izasa, from Colombia.
