- Story Text: Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi attended the East Asia World Economic Forum dinner hosted by Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra at the Royal Thai Navy Convention Hall in Bangkok on Thursday evening (May 31).
Suu Kyi chatted briefly with Yingluck as the two posed for pictures. Yingluck said she was honoured for Thailand to be serving as host for such a diverse community.
"More tourism within ASEAN make us appreciate more the culture, scenery and people of other regions. We learn more about each other's way of life, music, and art. We make more friends and for more partnerships," Yingluck said.
Earlier in the day (May 31), Suu Kyi held talks with Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung and returned to Samutsakorn province where Myanmar migrant workers greeted her raucously.
Suu Kyi is on her first trip outside Myanmar in 24 years. The Nobel Laureate had been reluctant to leave Myanmar for fear of being blocked from returned by the former military junta whose rule she challenged.
She is expected to address the World Economic Forum Friday (June 1) and participate in a panel about developing the political and economic leadership of Asian women in East Asia.
Before leaving Thailand, Suu Kyi is scheduled to visit the border refugee camps in Mae Sot.
Thailand is the first country Suu Kyi, the daughter of Myanmar's independence hero, Aung San, has seen since she left her home in Britain in 1988 temporarily - she thought - to return to Myanmar and take care of her dying mother. She arrived just as a student-led democracy uprising was erupting.
Suu Kyi was persuaded to lead the movement against dictatorship and was first placed under house arrest in 1989. She spent 15 of the next 21 years in detention and declined opportunities to leave. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
