- Story Text: United States presidential candidate Mitt Romney arrives in Israel where he will hold meetings with Israeli leaders and Palestinian prime minister.
U.S. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney arrived on Saturday (July 28) in Israel where he will meet Israeli leaders on Sunday.
Romney is scheduled to meet Israeli President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad during his visit.
Romney, who polls indicate is in a tight race with Obama, arrived after a three-day visit to London, where he raised British hackles by questioning whether London was ready for the Summer Olympics.
Israel-U.S. ties have been a familiar theme during Romney's election bid, and he has pledged stronger ties if he is elected.
He and conservative Netanyahu are old friends, and they will meet on Sunday before Romney gives a speech.
His visit coincides with a Jewish fast day that commemorates tragedies that have befallen the Jewish people.
Romney carried with him a tough message on Iran's nuclear programme, with senior national security aide Dan Senor saying the presidential candidate believes the threat of Tehran developing a weapon should be handled aggressively.
Romney's visit presents him the opportunity to appeal to both Jewish voters and pro-Israel evangelical voters and contrast himself with the Democratic incumbent Barack Obama, who has a rocky relationship with Netanyahu. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
