- Story Text: Final preparations were underway on Saturday (October 20) in Luxembourg ahead of the royal wedding.
The heir to Luxembourg's throne, Prince Guillaume on Friday (October 19) married Belgian Countess Stephanie de Lannoy in a civil ceremony at the City Hall.
The couple are to be married in a religious ceremony in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Luxembourg later on Saturday.
Crowds were expected to line the streets of Luxembourg, waiting to catch a glimpse of the bride's dress and to then look on as the newly-weds wave from the palace balcony after the ceremony.
Barriers were already in place in the city centre, with security and medics on hand to deal with the crowds.
"It's a very important event for Luxembourg, it's the royal wedding after all and so it's bringing together people from Luxembourg and the borders like me. I am French and I am also moved by it," French woman Anna told Reuters TV.
"It's exceptional and it doesn't often happen. There is lots of events and there is the firework and the party, so it's really exceptional," said Isabelle Altmann.
The festivities were expected to be rounded off with a lavish fireworks display later in the evening.
Royals from across Europe are expected to attend the celebrations, putting the tiny western European country with a population of a little under half a million people in the spotlight. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
