Spanish authorities said the men had links to al Qaeda and one of them was in possession of explosives when arrested, which were going to be used in attacks either in Spain or other European nations Two are from ex-Soviet republics who were arrested on Wednesday (August 1) close to Ciudad Real and likely heading to France, the third a Turkish man arrested on the same day near Cadiz whose house police found the explosives at.
Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz minister said one of the two arrested near Ciudad Real was a senior al Qaeda operative who had extensive experience in bomb-making.
He said the operation to arrest the men was conducted with the help of other international police forces, and that the explosive material was being analysed.
No details were given on how much material was found, though the minister said it was enough to blow up a bus.
An attack in 2004 outside a key railway station in Madrid which killed 191 people was blamed on al Qaeda. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
