- Story Text: Large parts of western suburbs of Bratislava were under water as floods which swept across central Europe reached the Slovak capital on Wednesday (June 5).
The district of Devin, set on the confluence of the rivers Morava and Danube close to the Austrian border, was virtually cut off from the rest of Bratislava as the deluge made paralysed all road traffic.
In the southern part of the city low-lying parks and a waterfront Danube cafe were flooded, but barriers were expected to hold back the worst.
The Danube water level in Bratislava broke through 10 metres on Wednesday evening, an all-time high and more than triple its usual level of around three meters.
It is expected to peak on Thursday (June 6) evening.
"Where I live the flood is not really a problem. I mean, I live up on a hill and on the 12th floor, but the real problem is how to get home. I mean the streets (leading) to the district where I live are flooded," resident of Bratislava, Dani, said.
In the coming days the water wave is expected to continue following the Danube towards Hungary, after it had passed through Germany, Austria and Czech Republic, killing at least 12 people and forcing tens of thousands to evacuate their homes since the weekend. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
