- Story Text: Croatia's capital Zagreb was under 40 centimetres (15.7 inches) of snow on Monday (January 14) morning after heavy snowfall lasted throughout the night.
More than 200 snowploughs were put into service to clean up the main roads as virtually all traffic ground to a halt, with public transport buses and trams either suspended or operating with delays.
Some commuters were upset.
"I'm bothered by all this. Some say everything is fine and that traffic will continue - but this is chaos. This is unbearable, it takes ages for me just to see my doctor," pensioner Ivo Mandic said.
But others took it in their stride.
"In any big city this would bring a (traffic) collapse. In America, in Europe, regardless - when this much snow falls, only during the night some of it can be cleaned up properly. Just let them do their job and it will be fine," Zagreb resident Goran Bacic said.
City authorities said they had to use volunteers and fire brigades to clean up the roads as the snow continued to fall during the day.
Heavy snowfall in northern part of the country also caused significant delays in train traffic, but Zagreb airport remained open throughout the day.
Forecasts say that more snow and rain are expected during the the week. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
