- Story Text: An Egyptian satellite channel has started beaming Hebrew programmes to Israel to try to win over viewers to Cairo's perspective on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The Hebrew Service on Egypt's state-owned Nile TV International began broadcasting on January 1.
The television station claims to give the Arab view of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Hala Hashish, vice president of Nile TV International said: "Our message is for the public. It is not just for the Israeli officials, because they know our point of view, but the people in Israel, they should know what's really the point of view. It is a sort of understanding more the culture of this area, in order that they would live in peace together.
This can't be done without really knowing the point of view of the Arabs and the Egyptians and the Palestinians."
Project supervisor at Nile TV International, Hassan Ali Hassan also said Israeli citizens should be aware of opinions other than those broadcast by their own media about the Palestinian issue and the peace process between Israel and the Arabs.
"We have realized that, through the open skies, it is possible to give the Israeli people an idea of the perspective of Egypt, or the situation that Egypt is expressing, to change perspectives Israel receives from its own media, to know that Egyptians and Arabs have a different point of view on the current situation and that the priority is placed on the issue of peace making in the Middle East and solving the Palestinian case" Hassan Ali Hassan told Reuters Television.
The broadcasts include news and current affairs discussions and a cultural programme using up to 50 Egyptians who speak fluent Hebrew.
The television station is scheduled to broadcast two hours of programming in Hebrew daily. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
