- Story Text: Thai boxer Khaokor Galaxy won the world bantamweight boxing title on Monday (May 9) on points from Wilfredo Vasquez of Puerto Rico. Khaokor outboxed and outpunched the more experienced Vasquez to earn the World Boxing Association (WBA) title with a split point decision after a 12-round bout. Held in Bangkok before a crowd of 10,000, the fight featured fierce exchanges in the third and fourth rounds. Vasquez had a clear reach advantage but could not keep up with the dancing and weaving movements of Khaokor, trained in the tough world of Thai kick-boxing. Judges Oscar Coronel of Argentina and Stanley Berg of the United States awarded scores of 115-112 and 115-113 for the Thai while another American, Lou Moret, favoured Vasques 114-113. Khaokor's victory establishes an unusual first - his twin brother Khaosai is the current world junior bantamweight champion and they are now the first twins ever to hold world boxing titles. Only two other sets of twins have fought at this level - heavyweights Henry and George Cooper of Britain and Mike and Jack Sullivan of the United States - but only one of each pair ever held the title.
