- Story Text: In South Africa, black students took to the streets on February 12 after a youth died during local unrest which left a trail of destruction across a souther township. According to police headquarters in Pretoria, the youth died the previous day in Seeisoville township, 200 kilometres (120 miles) south of Johannesburg. The cause of death was unknown, but police had been firing rubber bullets and teargas at about 3,000 schoolchildren who were rioting through the streets. Scores of shops, vehicles and homes were damaged. On February 12, and estimated 800 schoolchildren marched on government offices in Tsakane township near Johannesburg after officials pulled down squatters' shacks. However, they dispersed later without police action. At Mamelodi township near Pretoria, hundreds of black pupils smashed school windows after a high school was closed. Black schools have been rocked by violence for a year, as pupils have boycotted classes over grievances which include low education standards and insufficient facilities and equipment. Following the latest waves of unrest, and opposition politician called on the government to set up inquiry into allegations of police brutality in black townships. The call coincided with more unrest, as blacks marked the first anniversary of the death of a 15-year-old girl, heralding the worst year of white-black confrontation in South Africa since 1976.
