- Story Text: Britain's Prince Charles has arrived in Argentina for an official visit.
Britain's Prince Charles arrived in Argentina on Tuesday (March 9) for a historic three-day visit replete with symbols of reconciliation between the two former enemy nations.
The Prince of Wales, the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II and heir to the British throne, is the highest-ranking member of Britain's royal family to visit Argentina since the Falklands War in 1982.About 1,000 servicemen, mostly Argentines, were killed in the war.
Charles was received with a 21-gun salute at Jorge Newberry airport in Buenos Aires and laid a wreath at the monument to Argentina's independence hero, Gen.Jose de San Martin, in the Plaza San Martin in the centre of the city.He then met briefly with Argentine President Carlos Menem at the Pink House palace before paying homage to the Argentine soldiers killed in the former military dictatorship's failed attempt to capture the British-controlled Falkland Islands that Argentines call the Malvinas.
Menem laid a wreath to Britain's war dead at St.Paul's Cathedral in London late last year.
Charles will leave for neighbouring Uruguay on Thursday, and will travel to the sparsely populated Falklands on Saturday. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
