A special ceremony was held at the site. As Amazing Grace played on the bagpipes, the United Airlines employees placed a red, white, and blue wreath at the memorial platform.
The temporary platform has become a place of remembrance for the family members who lost loved ones in the attacks.
United Captain Freddie Pertuz said that when he started gathering a group of colleagues for a visit to Ground Zero, he expected maybe a dozen people. After a short time, the numbers of those wishing to attend swelled to over one hundred.
Captain Pertuz said, "Words -I can't find words to express the feeling we're having right now. It's pretty strong. The hardest thing we are trying to deal with is we had a lot of fiends on these airlines and this could have been one of us.
That's the thing we are trying to cope with"
Captain Mark Seal of United Airlines said, "It's something that allows you to see what we've been through both personally both professionally as airline employees and with the nation, what we've dealt with - it all comes back when you look into that hole"
American Airlines Flight 11 from Boston to Los Angeles was flown into one of the towers of the World Trade Center. United Airlines Flight 175 was enroute from Boston to Los Angeles when it was flown into the other tower of the World Trade Center.
Sara DelaCruz is a United Airlines flight attendent based in Boston. She said, "It's huge, to be here, because we drove down from Boston, these were our dear friends, we're a really close base in Boston - anyone of us would give anything to fly with those people onboard that aircraft, they were fun, they were loving, they would give their right arm for you and they loved to fly"
