- Story Text: Volunteers piled up sandbags to keep the swollen Vltava River from overwhelming Prague's historic centre on Monday (June 3) as the worst floods in a decade hit the Czech Republic.
Soldiers erected mobile metal fences and volunteers built walls of sandbags around the capital while road traffic was diverted across the capital.
Levels on the Vltava River, which cuts through Prague's centre, continued to rise on Monday. A spokeswoman for the state river management company said the levels could peak in the afternoon likely at half the level recorded in 2002.
The last time central Europe saw similar floods was in 2002, when 17 people were killed in the Czech Republic, and damage estimated at 20 billion euros ($26 billion) was inflicted.
Officials in Prague, the Czech capital listed by the U.N. cultural agency as a World Heritage Site, said they did not anticipate the waters of the swollen Vltava River, which runs through the centre, would reach the 2002 levels. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
