  • Story Text: A German court has sentenced urban guerrilla Johannes Weinrich to life imprisonment for his part in the bombing of a French cultural centre in West Berlin in 1983 which killed one man and injured 23 people.
    Johannes Weinrich, who prosecutors said was an associate of international guerrilla mastermind Carlos the Jackal, was convicted on Monday (Janaury 17) on one count of murder and five of attempted murder.
    The court gave a former Syrian diplomat Nabil Shritah a two-year suspended sentence for supplying Weinrich with 24 kg (53 lb) of explosives shortly before the bombing.
    The attack in August 1983 on the Maison de France cultural centre on West Berlin's main Kurfuerstendamm shopping street was part of a campaign by Carlos's associates to secure the release of two of their members who were in prison in France.
    Weinrich, a 52-year-old West German, was Carlos's right-hand man, prosecutors said during the four-year trial.
    A French appeals court last month rejected a request from Austria for Carlos's extradition to put him on trial for murder over his 1975 kinapping of OPEC oil ministers in Vienna.The Venezuelan-born Carlos, whose real name is Illich Ramirez Sanchez, is serving a life sentence for murder in Paris.
