- Story Text: Iraqis have gathered around TVs to watch an interview CBS made with their President Saddam Hussein.
Dan Rather, CBS' anchor man, met Saddam on Monday (February 23, 2003), in the oldest and largest presidential palace,at a time when the U.N. arms inspectors were accusing him of having prohibited missiles.
In his first interview with an American reporter in more than a decade, Saddam Hussein remained defiant.
Iraqi's watching the delayed interview on Thursday (February 27) felt their leader had put his case well.
"Mr. President talked about total issues regarding the region. The journalist asked Mr. President about al-Samoud missiles, the President's answer was adequate." said one local viewer.
Two days after the interview on Wednesday (February 25) President Saddam Hussein urged Iraqis to dig trenches in their gardens to defend against invaders and said the United States would pay with "abundant blood" if it attacked Iraq. Meanwhile, hundreds of demonstrators held an anti-war protest in Baghdad declaring their support for Saddam. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
