- Story Text: Thousands of mourners turned out on Thursday to say farewell to Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, the controversial TLC bandmember who was killed last week in an auto accident in Honduras.
Mourners crowded one of Atlanta's largest churches for the service honouring Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes. According to mourners, some had arrived as early as 0330EST (0730GMT) for the 1030 EST (1430 GMT) service. The Thursday (May 2) service was primarily for fans. Close friends and family members held a smaller, private ceremony on Wednesay (May 1).
Lopes' label, Arista Records says their offices have beseiged with thousands of messages of condolences since news of the 30-year-old singer's death was released.
Lopes made headlines in 1994 when she was arrested for burning down the house of then-boyfriend Andre Rison, a former Atlanta Falcons football player. She was sentenced to five years of probation, and then entered rehab for a drinking problem.
Atlanta-based TLC burst onto the music scene 10 years ago with its debut album, "Oooooooh...On the TLC Tip." Its 1994 follow-up, "CrazySexyCool," brought the group mainstream success, with help from the multimillion-dollar video for the ballad "Waterfalls." The album won TLC Grammys for best R&B album and R&B performance ("Creep").
The group's 1999 album "FanMail" topped the U.S. pop charts and sold more than eight million copies.
Lopes had been in Honduras working on several projects, including an upcoming solo album before the accident. Local newspaper La Tribuna said the accident occurred when Lopes was returning from a health centre that treats chronic illnesses with natural methods.
According to local police, the petite star was driving an all-terrain vehicle at high speed when she lost control. Seven other people were in the vehicle, including two of her siblings. Lopes, who suffered a fractured skill and internal injuries was the only person killed in the crash.
