- Story Text: Muslims in India's Kashmir on Tuesday (September 13) observed Eid al-Adha or the "Festival of Sacrifice" amid strict curfew and tight security.
Kashmir is in the middle of the worst unrest in six years that began on July 8 when security forces killed young separatist commander Burhan Wani, a respected figure among many young Kashmiris.
Indian authorities had on Monday (September 12) decided to impose a curfew across the Valley as joint separatist leadership called for a shutdown and protest march on Eid.
Separatists have also called for an "Azadi March" or freedom march towards local Eidgahs - open areas where people gather to offer prayers - and towards the United Nations office to submit a memorandum.
Roads largely remained deserted and heavy security remained in place as army and paramilitary personnel patrolled the streets of Srinagar.
Mobile internet and cell phone services were also partially blocked, the second such disruption since July 9.
At least 76 people, including security personnel, have been killed and more than 6,000 wounded in the violence that has surged in response to Wani's death.
In the latest incident, two civilians were killed and around 50 others injured in fresh clashes with security personnel on Saturday (September 10) while another youth died on Sunday (September 11) after succumbing to bullet wounds in an earlier clash with security forces.
Large swathes of Kashmir have remained shut for more than two months due to a curfew imposed by the government and separatist calls for a shutdown.
Kashmir is at the centre of a decades-old rivalry between India and Pakistan, which rules a northwestern section of the divided region, and backed an insurgency in the late 1980s and 1990s that Indian security forces largely crushed. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
