- Story Text: A Saudi Arabian jeweller has paid 7.15 million United States (U.S.) dollars for the largest flawless emerald-cut diamond ever offered for auction.
Ahmed Fitaihi bought the 80-carat diamond at Sothebys in New York on Thursday (October 24) with a bid of 6.5-million dollars, to which the auction house added 10 per cent commission.
Fitaihi told reporters he would name the newly-cut diamond "Jeddah Bride", after his home city. It is traditional for the first buyer of a major gem to give it a name, a Sotheby's spokesman said.
Fitaihi also paid 1.87 million U.S. dollars for a ring into which an emerald-cut diamond had been set. The 39.99-carat diamond was cut from "The Ice Queen", a 426-carat stone mined in South African in 1954. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
