- Story Text: Veteran filmmaker Martin Scorsese was in the spotlight February 20 when haccepted the 1997 Life Achievement Award from the prestigious American Film Institute at an exclusive black tie gala in Beverly Hills.
Sharon Stone, who was nominated for an Oscar for her work in Scorsese's "Casino," hosted the tribute program which featured rememberances from some ofScorsese's longtime show business friends and admirers.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the AFI Life Achievement Award tradition and Scorsese joins such greats as John Ford, Orson Welles, Fred Astaire, Billy Wilder, and Steven Spielberg in receiving the honor. Each yearthe honoree is chosen by the AFI's board of trustees. It's criteria for the award are that the recipient should be one whose talent has advanced the film art and whose accomplishment has been acknowledged by scholars, critics, peers, and the general public.
Scorsese's career has spanned 28 years and in that time he has directed more than 25 motion pictures, including such modern-day classics as "Mean Streets," "Taxi Driver," "Raging Bull," "Goodfellas," "The Color of Money," and, most recently "Casino." The AFI Tribute presented a retrospective look at Scorsese's career, featuring clips from his films and personal anecdotes by many of his closet colleagues. Among those participating were Robert De Niro, Jodie Foster, Barbara Hershey, Joe Pesci, Don Rickles, Winona Ryder, Paul Sorvino, and JameWoods. The award was presented to Scorsese by actor Gregory Peck.
In addition to his directing work, Scorsese has also devoted considerabletime and energy to champion film preservation and he's one the founders of theFilm Foundation, which promotes the restoration of films by studios and archives.
Founded in 1967, the American Film Institute is America's national arts organization dedicated to advancing and preserving the art of film, televisionand other forms of the moving image.
