- Story Text: French President Jacques Chirac met with Chinese Vice Prime Minister Hui Liangyu at the Elysee in Paris on Friday (April 21) for talks on the development of bilateral relations, trade exchanges and efforts to increase cooperation in all fields. International issues like the developing nuclear programs in Iran, the European Union's arms embargo on China were likely to be discussed as well.
France and China want to strengthen Sino-French economic and trade relations.
Hui Liangyu, in charge of rural affairs held earlier on Friday talks with Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and Rural Affairs minister Dominique Bussereau.
China promised to honour its commitment to buy half a million tonnes of French wheat but said the purchase may stretch into next season, a French government official said.
A year ago to the day, Paris and Beijing signed a letter of intent for France to sell 500,000 tonnes of wheat to the Asian giant during the 2005/2006 season that closes at the end of June - - a deal worth around $100 million.
But China has yet to buy a single tonne of wheat from France this season.
China and France have intensified their agricultural relations in recent years, a move that led to the purchase of 700,000 tonnes of French wheat last season, the first sale of French wheat to the country in almost 10 years.
Chinese Vice Prime Minister Hui Liangyu should also visit the Aquitaine, Auvergne and Lyon regions where he is due to have talks with many farming professionals.
During his trip to the French regions, Hui Liangyu should also meet with Transport, Tourism, Infrastructure and Sea Minister Dominique Perben and Mr Azouz Begag, Parity and Professional Equality Minister.
