- Story Text: The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) two-day ministerial meeting opened in Beijing on Friday (November 7).
Ministerial-level officials including U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry from APEC countries gathered at China's National Convention Centre on Friday afternoon to discuss the recovery of global growth.
The 21 APEC countries account for 40 percent of the world's population, 54 percent of its economic output and 44 percent of trade.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the Asia-Pacific region had the responsibility to help the global economy to recover.
"At this moment, the world needs a harmonious, developing and prosperous Asia-Pacific region more than ever. We are shouldering the responsibility to push forward self-development and lead global growth. There are unprecedented opportunity and challenge," Wang said at the opening ceremony of the meeting.
However, China's Commerce Minister Gao Hucheng said there were still many problems to be dealt with.
"At present, the world's economy has maintained slow recovery momentum but the impetus for new growth is not yet sufficient. Demand of international markets is sluggish, the foundation for recovery is not solid. As economic globalization continues to deepen, matching regulations and systems are still imperfect," Gao said.
The APEC Ministerial Meeting is expected to run from Friday to Saturday (November 8) ahead of the upcoming APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting.
