- Story Text: Students from a school in Pakistan named after Nobel prize winner Malala Yousafzai said on Wednesday (December 10) they want to follow in her footsteps.
Pakastani teenager Malala Yousafzai, shot by the Taliban for refusing to quit school, jointly received the Nobel Peace Prize with Indian activist Kailash Satyarthi, who is credited with saving around 80,000 children from slave labour sometimes in violent confrontations.
Malala became by far the youngest laureate, widely praised for her global campaigning since she was shot in the head on her school bus in 2012.
Students from the 'Malala Youfsafzai government girls seconday school' in Karachi, Pakistan have followed her achievements closely.
"We are feeling very happy that Malala received the Nobel Prize. The enemy wanted to block her from being educated. She confronted the enemy and made her way forward, and brought fame to our school and our country," said student Asia Mohammad Ismail.
Another student, Asia Arif, shared similar sentiments.
"We want to acquire education like Malala Yousafzai and make our school and country famous."
The students were asked to pray for a 'long life' for Malala, with one teacher at the school sending her congratulation to the now 17 year old.
"I congratulate Malala Yousafzai upon receiving this prize. She did excellent work at a young age which older people could not do. No one knew Malala Yousafzai six years ago but today she is known to every nook and corner of the world. We feel proud to be part of this school. We want our children to follow her footsteps. Every girl would want to be like Malala Yousafzai."
Malala arrived in Norway with friends and young activists from Pakistan, Syria and Nigeria before meeting thousands of children and walking the the streets to greet supporters.
Malala also opened an exhibit where her blood stained dress, worn when her school bus was attacked, was put on display. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
