- Story Text: U.S. National Security Adviser Tom Donilon held talks with a top Chinese general in Beijing on Wednesday (July 25).
Donilon and Xu Caihou, vice chairman of the People's Liberation Army Central Military Commission, met in the Defence Ministry.
With China's military expanding rapidly and the United States undertaking a strategic pivot toward the Asia-Pacific, U.S. officials have underscored the importance of building cooperative ties between the two militaries to help avert any misunderstandings as they come into increasing contact.
Donilon arrived in the Chinese capital on Monday (July 23), in the wake of Beijing and Moscow's veto of a U.N. Security Council resolution on Syria.
The White House has said ahead of Donilon's China trip that nonproliferation, regional security in Asia and the Middle East, and global economic growth would be on the agenda in Beijing.
Donilon held talks with President Hu Jintao on Tuesday (July 24), and is also scheduled to meet with vice President and leader-in-waiting Xi Jinping and vice Premier Wang Qishan later on Wednesday before flying to Tokyo. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
