- Story Text: Comic actor Sacha Baron Cohen pranks audience by pushing an elderly woman in a wheelchair off the stage while accepting award.
George Clooney, Benedict Cumberbatch and Sir Ben Kingsley led the winners at the annual Britannia awards Saturday (November 09), held by the Los Angeles arm of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) for those making an impact in Hollywood.
Clooney, 52, picked up the Britannia excellence in film award for his long body of work.
Actor Cumberbatch, who stars in three fall films, "The Fifth Estate," "12 Years a Slave" and "August: Osage County," was awarded the Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year.
And Oscar-winner Kingsley, who starred in 1982's "Gandhi," walked home with the Britannia Award for Worldwide Contribution to Entertainment.
The show was the scene of a new prank by comic actor Sacha Baron Cohen, known for his past roles as "Borat" and "Bruno." Baron Cohen was accepting the Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for Excellence in Comedy when he "accidentally" pushed an elderly woman in a wheelchair, into the audience. The actress, who was purported to have appeared in the 1931 Chaplin film "City Lights," had just presented Baron Cohen with a cane that she said belonged to the silent film star.
After she was carried away, seemingly unconscious, Baron Cohen addressed the crowd: "Grace Collington is the oldest... Was the oldest surviving actor to have worked with Chaplin. I dedicate this award to her, this is obviously a tragedy."
"She's upstaging me," he added. "This is obviously a tragedy but on the bright side, what a great way to go, giving an award to me."
