At least eight dead bodies were found in a ditch beside a road outside Marawi on Sunday (May 28), as fighting between Philippine troops and Islamic State-linked militants continued in the besieged city.
Police found the corpses around 8:00 a.m. (0000 GMT) after reports of gunfire in the area six hours earlier. Local residents later reported the bodies to local police.
The hog-tied corpses bore placards reading "hypocrite" in Arabic and were believed to be construction workers passing through the road around 2 kilometers away from Marawi.
The violent siege by the Islamic State-linked Maute group has left 46 people, 11 security forces and 31 rebels dead, since the fighting began on Tuesday (May 23), and has prompted President Rodrigo Duterte to declare martial law on the whole island of Mindanao. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
