- Story Text: Nepalese voters cast ballots in local elections for the first time in 20 years on Sunday (May 14) to vote for local council representatives.
The last time local government representatives were elected was in 1997. Their five-year term expired during a civil war and their mandates lapsed.
A peace deal ended the decade of conflict in 2006 and the transition from a kingdom to a republic began for Nepal, but it wasn't until 2015 that a new constitution was adopted. The charter mandated that local elections, provincial and national elections needed to be held by January 2018.
Voters, some of them going to polls for the first time on Sunday, were excited and hopeful of the power of their ballot. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
