- Story Text:The G20 labour and employment ministers gathered in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate on Thursday (May 18) ahead of the G20 summit in Hamburg in July. The ministers were expected to discuss digital change and the integration of refugees into the labour market.
Germany faces a challenge integrating the estimated 1.2 million people who arrived in Germany in 2015 and 2016 from countries including Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan - the first of whom are now starting to enter the labour market. Germany has taken measures to make it easier for asylum-seekers to enter the workforce - for example, most can now access the labour market after three months compared with nine months previously and as long as a year in Britain.
Germany took over the presidency of the G20 leading economies in November 2016. Chancellor Angela Merkel wants to use the presidency to safeguard multilateral cooperation under threat following Donald Trump's U.S. election victory.
The Hamburg G20 summit in July is taking on increased significance as Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin plan to hold their first face-to-face meeting on the sidelines of the meeting. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
