- Story Text:With the rising sun, deployed federal troops are seen guarding Congress and ministry buildings in the Brazilian capital on Thursday (May 25) to contain protests against President Michel Temer and his austerity measures.
A day before, several thousand anti-government protesters clashed violently with police here and set fire to the Agriculture Ministry.
Troops will not be there for long though as the government on Thursday revoked a presidential decree that deployed the army soldiers.
The government said it deployed troops on Wednesday (May 24) to quell the demonstration because police forces were overwhelmed by tens of thousands of protesters seeking Temer's resignation and early elections. Calling out the army was sharply criticized by the president's opposition and some allies alike. About 50 people were injured in the violent protest.
One Brasilia resident said he agreed with peaceful demonstrations but criticised vandalism. Another criticised the military police for targeting demonstrators. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
