- Story Text: Hundreds of clowns painted their faces and donned their wigs, hats, big shoes and red noses to take to the streets of Lima on Thursday (May 25) on the locally celebrated Peruvian Clown Day.
A long procession of clowns of all kinds and colours made their way through Lima's downtown streets bringing smiles to area residents as well as their fellow clowns.
The clowns celebrate Peruvian Clown Day every May 25 to mark the death of Tony Perejil, known as "the clown of the poor." Carrying a multicoloured tent, Perejil used to visit Lima neighbourhoods in the 1980s to spread joy but spent his last days alone and bedridden in a hospital.
The jesters came in all shapes and sizes, happy and sad and some even dressed as clown superheroes, Smurfette and Barcelona Football Star Lionel Messi. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
