- Story Text: Cambodia's opposition leader Kem Sokha rallied supporters on Sunday (May 28) to drum up support ahead of commune elections in early June, giving speeches, shaking hands and greeting people on the streets in eastern Prey Veng province.
He said he was optimistic that his party, the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) would do well in the upcoming polls on June 4 and secure more than 60 percent of the 1,646 commune leader positions up for grabs.
There are 12 political parties taking part in this election but only CNRP and Prime Minister Hun Sen's Cambodian People's Party (CPP) have candidates in all communes. The outcome of this vote is seen as a gauge of the popularity of the two main parties ahead of general elections next year where Hun Sen is seeking to extend a 32-year mandate.
In the last general elections four years ago, CPP won with a narrow margin of 13 seats ahead of CNRP, offering encouragement to people seeking change but also alarming the CPP who saw its leadership challenged for the first time. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
